As designers, we constantly seek new tools and resources to help create engaging and practical websites. We use a variety of references for our projects, from scouring design blogs and inspiration boards to doing research studies and using many other online resources.

If you have been up to date with the latest news and trends, the term ‘ChatGPT’ and its success would have most likely reached your ears.

And so, you’re probably wondering… ‘What can ChatGPT do for me?’

What is ChatGPT?

To put it simply, ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence language model trained by OpenAI that can communicate with humans through text-based conversations.

It has been trained using a vast amount of written text to the point where it has learned to understand how people talk and reply like a human.

ChatGPT is able to cover a wide range of topics, but for this article, we will just be focusing on design.

Here are some things that I’ve personally tested out and find extremely useful:

  1. Answer design-related questions
  2. Provide design resources
  3. Idea generation
  4. User experience (UX) design
  5. Content creation

Answer design-related questions

As previously mentioned, ChatGPT has been trained on a wide range of topics, and that includes design principles, user experience, accessibility, and more. You can use ChatGPT to ask questions and get answers on these topics, which can help you make more informed design decisions.

Provide design resources

There are many resources for design that can help you work more efficiently and effectively. These resources can enhance the quality of your work while also saving you a great amount of time.

However, with so many resources available on the internet, it can be overwhelming to find the most suitable ones for your needs.

ChatGPT can help provide web designers access to a wide range of design resources, such as fonts, graphics, and design templates.

Idea generation

ChatGPT can help web designers come up with new ideas for website designs or layouts.

If you’re struggling to come up with new ideas for a website design, you can ask ChatGPT for suggestions. For example, you could provide a brief description of the website you’re designing, and ChatGPT could generate some ideas and suggestions to help you get started.

In this case, I have asked it for some ideas for a classy, modern, and fun-looking online bookstore:

User experience (UX) design

Research is a crucial step in designing a website. You can create an absolutely stunning website but not be able to communicate it well to your audience.

Designing something to make it look appealing can be easy, but designing a good experience can be a challenging task.

Here is where ChatGPT can help. It can help designers create user personas, user flows, and wireframes for websites, which can help improve the user experience.

Content creation

Say that you have an idea of what you want to convey on your website but don’t know how to articulate them into words.

Well, ChatGPT can assist in doing that for you. It can help generate text that is clear, concise, and engaging, which can save you time and help you produce high-quality content that resonates with your target audience.

Whether it is brand messages, product descriptions, blog posts, or headlines, you can provide the topic or theme, and ChatGPT can help generate the text.

You can even set a few criteria for your content. As seen from the example below, I have asked it to write a brand message within 5 words:
